Children’s attraction to screens is nothing new. However, the ubiquitous nature of TVs, tablets, and phones today is having a serious impact on our kids.
I see it with my 6-year-old son and his friends.
We all know screen usage can ramp up stress, disturb sleep and even bring on symptoms of depression, yet we are all guilty of handing over our phones when we are trying to squeeze in a 5-minute adult conversation without getting interrupted.
It’s a perverse marriage that drives me nuts. And I’m as guilty as the next parent.
I set out to create something that promotes the core principles that support my desired lifestyle for my son: living in the present moment, getting outside as often as possible, and disconnecting from technology when possible. That’s why I say it loudly to anyone who will listen, adults and children alike:
Bobby, Get a Hobby!
Written and illustrated in a bit of a throwback style, recalling a simpler time (gosh I sound 100 years old!), the story encourages children to find stimulating activities that allow them to self-soothe, challenge themselves, tap into their brainpower, and potentially make friends with similar interests.
Next time you see a child spending too much time on a screen, I hope you will tell them about this book. This companion website also offers information on how to get started with many different hobbies.
Happy reading!
