“GET A HOBBY”
I have repeated the phrase thousands of times throughout my life. Whether it’s my son flipping endlessly through Netflix, my wife incessantly swiping through her Instagram feed or my creamsicle-colored dog moping along the floor — my response is always the same: Get a hobby.
Sometimes I say it nicely, other times maybe not so much. But every time I utter the words “GET A HOBBY,” I mean it.
As someone who has found great joy in keeping busy by taking on projects that stimulate me in a myriad of ways, I think everyone should get a hobby.
Especially kids!
When I think back to the books I read as a child, and look at the books I read my son now, I’ve never come across a picture book that illustrates all of the amazing hobbies that are out there.
Like some of the best things in life, the goal came out of nowhere: Andrew, if you can help one child find a hobby, you have done some good in the world.
And BOBBY, GET A HOBBY! was born. It had to be. And I’m so glad it was. I have had the good fortune to be involved in many creative projects throughout my career, but this one just feels so right. While writing a children’s book was never on my bucket list, it has been a wonderful and rewarding journey. To see children react to the book in real-time is beyond amazing. And satisfying. And surreal. And, and, and!
I would be remiss if I did not thank the ever-talented Charity Russell. She brought my vision to life with her wonderful illustrations. And while we have never met in person, you can just tell she is one of the “good ones.”
